Singapore 2011 General Elections- Results
This year, the elections has turned out to be very favorable for the Worker’s Party (WP). The big gamble paid off. WP managed to retain it’s parlimentary seat in Hougang SMC and captured Aljunied GRC. Going forward, WP will have 6 parlimentary seats in the parliment.
History was witnessed by thousands of Workers’ Party supporters at Hougang Stadium early on Sunday morning when the results were announced. This is the first time in Singapore’s history that PAP had lost a GRC. WP’s Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang had gambled by leaving his single seat ward Hougang to contest in Aljunied GRC.
The Workers’ Party won with 54.71 percent of valid votes. In his victory speech on Sunday, a jubilant Mr Low said: “This is a political landmark in modern Singapore. Your courage has made a real breakthrough for future generations. We know this has not been an easy decision for each and everyone of you, but you have cast aside doubts and fears, and taken a real leap of faith.
“Your votes tell us the government that you want – a home, not just a house. Your votes tell the world that Singapore is not just an economic success to you. Singapore is our home.” As for Hougang SMC, WP’s Yaw Shin Leong secured the seat with 64.81 percent of valid votes despite intense pressure.
