7th July 2011, Thursday. This date marks an important day in Secondary 2, the day in which the Semi-Finals judging will be held instead of lessons.

What is Projects Day about?
Each student is allowed to get into groups and complete their project, with many choices of project categories of which they can choose from. The categories of projects are
Cat-1: Experimental
Cat-2: Non-Experimental
Cat-3: Inventions
Cat-4: Resource Development (+ Cat-2B)
Cat-5: Creative Arts
Cat-6: Language Arts (English)
Cat-7: Language Arts (Chinese)
Cat-8: Service Learning
Cat-9: Mathematics
Cat-10: Infocomm
Cat-11: Future Trends

My Group's Project
I am the leader of my project group, which is entitled 'Green Earthworms'. My group is in Category 1, experimental research. I will give a brief introduction to my project.

Many believe that earthworms are helpful for plants, and even harvest their castings to be sold as organic fertilizers. Earthworms wriggle about in soil, helping to break up and loosen it. They also drop their castings along the aerated soil. These castings are nutritious, which is why many believe that earthworms aid plant growth.

We are testing the effectiveness of earthworms (Perionyx Excavatus) on plants (how they affect growth), hence the name ‘Green’ Earthworms, as we know for a fact that they are environmentally friendly. We set up an experiment with and same plants in pots. We added in different amounts of earthworms into the pots- 3 pots had 3 earthworms, 3 pots had 10 earthworms, and the other 3 pots had none. We weighed and measured the height of the plants weekly, giving them the same amount of water.

Before the experiment, we predicted that the earthworms would make a difference in aiding the plants’ growth, and we carried out the experiment to find out how effective they would be.  Apparently, the pots with 10 earthworms have taller and heavier plants than the other two groups of pots. The pots with 3 earthworms also have plants which grew taller and heavier than the pots with none. Thus, we can conclude that our hypothesis is right. However, we will be furthering our project by testing the effect of these earthworms on other types of plants too. Currently, we are using the Gerbera daisy to test the effectiveness of the Perionyx Excavatus. As this proved successful, we are taking a step further by the testing of the effectiveness of earthworms on another type of another plant, the Water Spinach, otherwise known as Kankon.
