My Favourite Character in To Kill a Mockingbird
Harper Lee's classic novel was full of interesting and richly painted characters. Out of all of them, the character I find most interesting is Atticus. A lawyer and resident of the Maycomb County, Alabama, and the father of Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch and Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, Atticus is a central character in the novel. I like him as he is an honest and wise man, representing the moral ideal of both a lawyer and a honest person (there is a saying that lawyers are liers, which is untrue). Atticus is morally upright, and an extremely opinionated tireless crusader for good causes, a kantianist who was devoid of any of the racial or class prejudices afflicting the other citizens of Maycomb. He goes to great pains to instruct his children on the importance of being open-minded, judicious, generous neighbors and citizens, and against racism, Atticus helps Tom Robinson in the novel, who is accused of rape, and tries to let his innocent client get free. He was an expert marksman, but he had chosen to keep this fact hidden from his children so that they would not in any way think of him as a man of violence. He is an extremely interesting character and I look up to him, as he went through great pains, including threats from the other citizens of Maycomb, just to save his innocent client, Tom Robinson. He represents a sense of hope for Tom Robinson in the story, although Tom was eventually killed, and, as a wise man, he is morally upright character in the novel. He has thus impacted me and I feel that he is my favourite character after reading the novel.
